Cape Hatteras National Seashore is one of the East Coast's birding hotspots. It has been named an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society. A string of barrier islands 70 miles long makes up the Park where birding is a year-round activity.

Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge - is located on the north end of Hatteras Island, and is a haven for more than 265 species of birds. Trails and platforms are available for birders to use.

Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is on Roanoke Island. Open year-round, Alligator River is home to thousands of wintering waterfowl and other migratory birds.

Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve - is a stark contrast to the nearby wind-whipped dunes of Jockey's Ridge. Here birders will find a wide variety of local and migrating songbirds.
